On Saturday, 31 Under 13 Camogie players travelled by bus to to Mayo to play Craughwell in a challenge game in the Connacht centre of excellence. It was an amazing opportunity to play in the World’s largest air dome and a great experience before they begin their championship in a few weeks.
After high spirits on the bus journey up, there were gasps of awe as the Dome came into sight and phone were taken out to ensure that the moment was captured!
After a quick change into match gear, the girls began their warm up, followed by a quick team talk where the girls were told to enjoy the experience and give it their very best. With 30 girls available to play, we fielded two equal teams. Team 1 started and played the first 15 minutes. Both teams had chances to score but, due to superb goal keeping from both the Craughwell and Sixmilebridge no1s they were denied the chance. Eventually, Sixmilebridge got a point about 10 minutes into the game.
Shortly afterwards, Sixmilebridge management called for subs changes. Much to the amusement of the referee, all 15 girls left the pitch to make way for their teammates! Craughwell were well warmed up at this stage and managed to score two goals in quick succession, but were answered with a point form the Sixmilebridge side.
The second half was played in the same style with each girl playing 15 minutes. Sixmilebridge scored three goals in this half, coming out on the winning side in a close and exciting game.
Many thanks to Craughwell for a great game, these teams have met a number of times and always provide great challenge matches for each other.
A quick bus trip brought us to Supermacs to refuel before the journey home. The girls were in high spirits and plenty of songs were sung all the way home!
