Sixmilebridge 5-6 Wolfe Tones 0-9

Sixmilebridge hosted Wolfe Tones Na Sionna in this Round 5 under 14A clash on Friday evening. The visitors got off to the better of starts and were two points up 3 minutes in with Barry Justice and Peter McEvoy slotting over after good runs at the Sixmilebridge goal. The ‘Bridge boys soon got into their stride however, and six minutes in Brendan Carey took possession of an outfield ball and made a beeline for the Wolfe Tones goal sidestepping the goalie and tapping the ball into the back of the net. Ronan Walsh levelled matters on 12 minutes with a well worked point by Wolfe Tones. For the rest of the half the ‘Bridge lads got stuck in outscoring the visitors four points to one with the highlight being a 70 metre pointed free from Seamus O’Connell on 20 minutes. Halftime score 1-4 to 0-4 in favour of the ‘Bridge.
The ‘Bridge got off to a flier in the second half, with Brendan Carey making a run at goal striking a shot across the goal, where the waiting Daniel Chaplin pulled first time into the back of the net.
Wolfe Tones responded with a score of their own on 4 minutes, with a point from Craig Riordan. But again the ‘Bridge kept the pressure on, and after a sublime catch from Seamus O’Connell from a puckout, he sent a long ball into the forwards where Dara Fitzgerald won possession, broke free of his marker and made no mistake for the third ‘Bridge goal. Wolfe Tones had their own purple patch for the next ten minutes, with Craig Riordan giving an excellent display of hurling at half forward, scoring three points on the bounce putting the ‘Bridge backline under pressure. All their good work, however, was undone 15 minutes in when Danny Dunne fielded a high ball, turned and hit a bullet into the back of the Wolfe Tones net to notch up goal number four for the ‘Bridge. Two minutes later Oisin O’Rourke, in the Wolfe Tones goal, made a brilliant save from point blank range to prevent another score. For the rest of the game the sides were even, with both sets of backs dominating proceedings. With the match in added time, Conor Murphy made a run towards goal giving a clever hand pass into Dara Fitzgerald for a goal and the last score of the game. This was a very entertaining game and it was the ability of the ‘Bridge forwards to score goals, five from four different players being the difference between the two teams.
For Sixmilebridge, Brendan Carey, Danny Dunne, Cian Johnson and Ian Collins stood out.
For Wolfe Tones, Craig Riordan was excellent, Peter McEvoy, and Oisin O’Rourke (Goalie). Whilst the score line might suggest otherwise, O’Rouke made some brilliant saves and prevented at least two more goals.
