Sixmilebridge 2-10 Clonlara 1-13.

Sixmilebridge got their Minor A championship up and running when they hosted Clonlara last Friday evening in a very entertaining game that ended in a draw. The ‘Bridge were first to register on the scoreboard when Jack Corry pointed from a free 2 minutes in. They got off lightly two minutes later when Tom Power for Clonlara won possession and struck a good ball across the goal only to see it trail wide. Shane Whyte made a good save on 7 minutes when he confidently controlled a high dropping ball and also cleared it. Clonlara were beginning to exert a lot of pressure on the ‘Bridge goal with Conor Burke getting two nice points from play to level the game on 12 minutes. Lorcan Fitzpatrick put the ‘Bridge back in front 2 minutes later with a monster 70 metre free which appeared to be going wide but pulled back in at the last second. Clonlara were now beginning to turn the screw and only for some wayward striking they would have pulled well ahead. Dylan Downes put the ‘Bridge ahead again 18 minutes in with a brilliant point from all of 70 metres out. The lead was short lived however as 2 minutes later Clonlara were awarded a disputed 65. Bryan McLeish struck a powerful shot with a low trajectory toward the ‘Bridge goal. Shane Whyte got a block on it but it deflected in to the back of the net for the game’s opening goal. Clonlara kicked on and got the next two points from play thanks to Aidan Moriarty and Tom Power. Jack Corry and Lorcan Fitzpatrick kept the ‘Bridge in the game with two more points from frees but Clonlara finished out the half on top with two more points from play and to be honest they should have been much further ahead such was their dominance. Half time score 0-6 to 1-7 in favour of Clonlara.
The ‘Bridge made a few changes at halftime with Mark Gaule moving to full forward and Jack Corry switching to half forward. Luke Keogh replaced John Hogan at corner forward and Colin Kelly came on in place of Alex Frost in corner back. The move of Jack Corry paid dividends very quickly as he was winning a lot of ball in the half forward line and sending quick direct ball into the full forward line. 3 minutes in one of these balls broke loose in around the square with Sean McNamara gaining possession he hit it into the bottom right corner of the goal. Within a minute Lorcan Fitzpatrick and Mark Gaule added two more points and the ‘Bridge were back in front. The score of the game came 10 minutes in when Dylan Downes made a lightening quick run from his own half back line and 60 metres out made a lovely pass to Jack Corry who returned the ball to Downes who had kept running and he popped the ball over the bar. Aidan Moriarty pulled two points back from frees for Clonlara before Mark Gaule got the second ‘Bridge goal when he caught a high ball, and using his strength he turned and buried it to back of the net on 14 minutes. Again Clonlara responded with two more points from play in the next two minutes as each side found it difficult to pull away. Shane Whyte pulled off a cracking save a minute later as Tom McLeish hit a bullet of a shot at the ‘Bridge goal. As a heavy drizzle descended over O’Garney park the last quarter turned into a dogfight with both defences asserting their authority. Scores were at a premium at either end but Lorcan Fitzpatrick finally broke the deadlock with 3 minutes remaining with a point from play to put the ‘Bridge one point up. Aidan Moriarty equalised with the game heading into injury time with a free. Both sides then had an opportunity to win the match in injury time as first Clonlara were awarded a free 50 metres out on the wing. Aidan Moriarty hit a good strike but it tailed away to the right and wide. From the puck out the ‘Bridge were awarded a free on the sideline 70 metres out. Lorcan Fitzpatrick’s effort came up short and as the Clonlara full back came out with the ball the final whistle sounded.
For Clonlara Bryan McLeish, Conor Burke and Aidan Moriarty were excellent throughout.
For Sixmilebridge Shane Whyte, Adam Breen, Dylan Downes, and Jack Corry were most impressive especially with their work rate.
