Gurteen Tuesday 31/7/2018
Result: SMB 1-11 Doora Barefield 1-4
The second round of the U16 A Shield competition took place in the perennially windy venue of Gurteen. This game was no different with the ‘Bridge playing into a strong wind in the first half. The visitors started brightly however, with great pressure from the ‘Bridge forwards resulting in Evan O’ Callaghan splitting the posts in the 3rd minute. The ‘Bridge proved this early score was no fluke by adding on two frees from Seamus O’ Connell and a lovely score from play from Noel Flynn in the 10th minute.
Doora/Barefield began to use the wind to their advantage raining ball down on top of their full-forward lined and Bryan Ruane clipped over a point in the 12th minute after latching onto a long ball. The ‘Bridge full-back line, led by Conor Morey, all did exceptionally well to hold their opponents to just 1 point in that 12 minute spell of pressure. The ‘Bridge ended the half well with Evan O’Callaghan again scoring a fine point in the 25th minute, this time off his Left hand . O’Callaghan also had a goal wrongly disallowed on the stroke of half-time by referee Flan O’ Reilly. The scoreline at half-time reflected the ‘Bridge’s excellent all round performance against the breeze, as they led 0-5 to 0-1.
The ‘Bridge started the 2nd half with a bang as Conor Murphy slotted a point in the 1st minute of the half. The ‘Bridge introduced Eoin Carroll and James Egan five minutes into the new half. The decision to bring on Egan would pay huge dividends as in the 41st minute he leapt highest to claim a high ball before spinning and rifling to the net. The two teams exchanged points and at the end of the 3rd quarter the men in Saffron and Blue led by 1-7 to 0-2.
Seamus O’ Connell then struck over a free from his own 65 and the recently introduced Cian Gleeson teed up Conor Murphy for a score after a strong drive through the DB defence. Doora/Barefield responded with 2 frees and the ‘Bridge matched this with a free each from Gleeson and O’Connell. Donal O’ Driscoll struck for a late consolation goal for the home team to leave the final score at Sixmilebridge 1-11 Doora/Barefield 1-4.
So 2 wins from 2 games so far in this competition. The foundations for this away victory were very much laid in defence where Conor Morey at Full back and Scott Kirkland at Centre back excelled and drove the team forward. Likewise Morgan O’Connell at right half back was always playing on the front foot and gave good ball into his forwards. Upfront Seamus O’Connell and Evan O’Callaghan in the central positions were scorers and providers in chief, while James Egan when he came on took his goal superbly and showed his ability to catch high ball comfortably.
