Martin Conlon togged out one last time for the 'Bridge last Sunday in a junior challenge game against Kilbecanty from Galway. Kilbecanty are in the semi final of the Glaway Junior championship this weekend so were looking for a strong challenge beforehand. Ross O' Donnell who has played with the 'Bridge juniors for the last few years hails from Kilbecanty originally and indeed lined out against his brother on the day. He mentioned that he couldnt mark him however as his brother actually works with him in his plumbing business, so he said hed be afraid he would do damage to his brother and ultimately his business!
The game was lively enough, Kilbecanty being a strong physical side, there were a few skirmishes but this was brief amongst an entertaining hours hurling. Kilbecanty eventually ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-19 to 2-12. Notable during the game was the contribution of a goal from regular corner back, Billy Maxwell who played at full forward having had his fill of corner forwards for 2018!
Conlon contributed a few points for the home side on the day and showed that if he chose to hed still be more than capable, he said afterwards the game was a perfect send off, 'it was no walk in the park, just how i wanted it'. Martins family were present on the day to give him a send off and a few pints were had that evening in Gleesons.
Well done to Martin on a great career on the pitch and the club are looking forward to the next chapter outside the white line. Of course Martins kids are currently playing with the underage hurling and camogie teams so the name Conlon will be around for a while at O' Garney park. And Martins brother Robert lines out in goals for the intermediates.
