Player & Child Night Report

There was a great turnout on Tuesday night last at the Gaa Hall for our 2019 U6 player and child night which is really an opportunity for those parents and children new to hurling to get a grasp of the basics before they hit the hurling field proper.

Over 30 players togged out on the night and club Coaching officer David O’ Connor duly introduced parents and players to the club and informed them of the structure and policies before handing over to Coach Jim Corbett.

The session was given on the night by Coach Jim Corbett with assistance from some of the other U6 coaches Mike, Johnny, Paul, Peter and Elaine/Linda/Michelle of the U6 admin team did the admin work on the night.

The players and parents were shown how to hold the hurley, given information on hurley size and weight, were shown good technique regarding running, sideways movement/dodging, jumping and landing, solo, underarm throw and claw catch, and finally they learned how to do the hurley ready position, lock and c-swing.

All parents are encouraged to practice the following at home with their kids; the mirrors game (sideways movement), high jumping competition, throwing and catching socks (if no bean bags) and c-swing starting in front of the face to reduce chance of being hooked.

So it’s onwards and upwards for this new batch of Sixmilebridge Gaa U6s who will make lots of new friends, have great fun on the way and learn some good life skills and a bit of hurling too!
