Sixmilebridge 1-16 Wolfe Tones 2-12

Venue: Newmarket, 21/07/2019

Our 2nd adult hurling team have epitomised the strength of hurling in the club in recent years where they have been ultra competitive in league and championship action. They are a serious bunch of players who regularly face Senior teams and always rise to the occasion and today was no different when they were crowned league champions after they defeated Wolfe Tones Senior team by a single point.

This years team has a nice mix of youth as well as the experienced heads of Tadhg Keogh, David O'Connor and of course Gilly and all played their part today. The Bridge started the better and made good use of the cross wind breeze to race into a 5 points to 1 lead but Wolfe Tones pegged it back with a goal and Daithi O'Connell was denied another for the Shannon side by the super reflexes of Bridge net minder Shane Whyte. Sean Lynch hit 4 frees in the first half along with 2 from David O'Connor and 1 each from Tuts, Crowe, Carey and Sheehan to leave 2 points in it: 0-10 to 1-05.

Wolfe Tones can out a more determined side in the second half but Lynch continued to keep the score board ticking over with the Bridge leading 0-13 to 1-07 with about 15 minutes remaining when an old style schmozzle broke out resulting in a red card for both teams. This lifted the Tones who raised a green flag through Evan O'Gorman but the Bridge responded quickly - firstly the introduction of Gilly settled the nerves and this was followed by a goal by Jack Corry to put 3 points between the sides. SMB 1-15 to 2-09. The Shannon side hit 3 quick points to level matters coming up to the end of normal time but the Bridge piled on the pressure resulting i n a free for Sean Lynch to convert and give a well deserved win for the Bridge boys.

The Bridge return to the top division for the 2020 hurling league to join our Senior team which is a massive achievement in itself for the club. Enjoy the celebrations and best wishes in the Championship in 2 weeks.

After the game county board chairman Joe Cooney presented the cup to winning captain Pa Sheehan who gave a heart warming speech fully as gaeilge.
