The Sixmilebridge U10s will be hosting their annual Barry Quinn tournament this Saturday (15th) in O'Garney Park between 10am and 1:30pm.
A great mornings hurling is in store with teams from St Marys Clonmel, Ballina (Tipp), Na Piarsaigh and O'Callghans Mills all hoping to dethrone Sixmilebridge who have won the tournament for the last 2 years.
This tournament is a big highlight of the U10s season and is a great opportunity for the boys play against clubs outside the county while continuing to honour the memory of our friend and former playing colleague Barry Quinn.
The Bridge, St Marys and Ballina will be entering 2 teams each with Na Piarsaigh and the Mills bringing 1 team each. The teams will be divided into 2 groups of 4 with each team playing 3 group games. In the group games a win earns 3 points and a draw 1 point with the top team in each group meeting in the final. The teams who do not make the final will participate in a 'play-off' game to ensure all teams get to play 4 games on the day.
The running order of the tournament will be:
- Group Games : 10am - 11:45am
- Break for food\refreshments: approx 11:45 - 12:15pm
- Final games and presentation: 12:15pm-1:00pm
Some of the rules for the tournament:
- Teams are 11 aside
- Games are 12 minutes a half
- Players can rise the ball from the start.
- No soloing ( 4 steps with ball in hand allowed after control/catching it, and a touch of the ball off hurley into the hand gains the player another 4 steps if needed before striking)
- No square ball
- 30 metre free (ie 65) is awarded where a defender plays the ball over his end line
- Scores direct from puckouts will not count
- There is no limit on substitutions throughout the game
- Clubs entering 2 teams are requested to pick them on a 'mixed-ability' basis
- All games are to be played in the spirit of Go Games and the ‘Give Respect Get Respect’ initiative promoted by the GAA. The primary focus is on participation and fun with the competitive aspect being a secondary element.
