Finnachtas take the spoils in Village Derby

Parish League Rd 3, Game 1

St. Finnachtas 12-13
St Marys 6-07

Finnachtas took the spoils in the heavily anticipated village derby which pitted brother against brother on the sideline, with Mikey Corbett managing Finnactas and Johnny Corbett managing Mary's.

Some outside factors conspired however on the day to deprive Mary's of a lot of their senior players - A stag party for Johnny Hayes! Thebn there was the addition of some Ard Scoil players later in the game, for Finnactas - they had been delayed at the All Ireland colleges game against Athery. This addition further strengthened Finnactas and they were able to go on a goal spree thereafter.

Mary's will feel hard done by, and rightly so but to be fair to them they battled hard to the end but they knew the game was up a long time before the final whistle.

Nobody should get carried away with this result, it doesn't reflect fairly on Marys who have one game left to show what they are made of, they will face Cappa in their final group game. There could be a bit to play for yet with rumor's of a blitz style playoff between Teams 3, 4, 5 to take 3rd place overall, on the Finals weekend.

For Marys , it was good to see Kevin Fennessey didnt leave the skills in Canada where he resided for a few years, playing with some wonderful skill and long range striking. Also Evan Murphy, Barry Dolan and the full back line especially Billy Maxwell tried hard to stop the Marys tide. Jamie Keane contributed enough goals that on a normal day would have made a difference.

Good for Finnachtas on the day were young Conor Murphy in patches, Aidan Quilligan who looked composed at the back, but did venture up front to get himself on the scoresheet! Ronan Tuohy looked dangerous all day but Gavin Whyte and Jamie Lyons did most of the damage up front. Lyons in superb form flicking balls over lads heads and all!
