Intermediate Hurling Championship
Sixmilebridge 1-15
Whitegate 0-25
Venue - Broadford
Referee - Jim Hickey
Our Intermediates played Whitegate in Broadford on Sunday in their last group game. This was a must win game to prgress to the knockout stages and hopes were high after a great win against Clarecastle last week.
The Bridge opened the scoring with a Paul Corry free and this was quickly answered by 2 frees from Whitegates man of the match Conor Whelan. Quick thinking from Mark Sheedy found Cathaoir Agnew twice from puckouts in the midfield area with 2 beautiful long range points resulting. A further direct puck out to Dara Fitzgerald yielded another long range score and at 18 minutes the Bridge were trailing by a couple of points 0-7 to 0-5. The Bridge finished the half with a couple of more frees from Paul Corry and one from Caimin Morey as well as a lovely point from midfield from Dylan Downes and also a point from full forward Cathal Lynch, the half time score was Whitegate 0-11 to the Bridge's 0-9.
The second half started well for the Bridge with a goal for Paul Corry who finished well after an intial Jack Corry shot was saved. Followed by a free from Paul, the Bridge took the lead again for the first time since the opening minutes of the first half. Another long range effort from Dara Fitzgerald saw the Bridge maintain that lead however a purple patch for Whitegate followed where they scored 5 points on the trot to see them leading by 4 points after 20 mins. A good point was scored from play from Adam Breen who had moved to the half forward line at half time after Cillian Custy replaced Luke Keogh. Dylan Downes got his second point for the day and another for Breen and a second also for Cathal Lynch saw out the Bridge scoring for the day. The Bridge were chasing goals in the last few minutes to try and tie the game and thus the final few minutes were exciting as the Bridge pumped several balls into the full forward line. Cillian Custy had advanced forward at this stage and had one shot saved and another went just wide while Cathal Lynch plucked a few from the air and tried hard to hit the back of the net, kicking one just over the bar, but the Whitegate defence stood strong and a final 3 point flurry from Whitegate saw them win out the tie 0-25 to 1-15.
The Bridge had very good displays from the full back line of Aidan Quilligan and Adam and Oisin Breen. Adam moved to center forward at half time and contributed there also but Oisin throughout the game defended excellently and was arguably the Bridge's best player on the day. Good displays also from midfield pairing Dylan Downes and Cathaoir Agnew and Cathal Lynch and Paul Corry up front looked threatening throughout however Conor Whelan of Whitegate ultimately was the main difference between the 2 teams scoring 0-12 (7f, '65).
