Davy Fitzgerald is to remain on as Wexford manager after committing to a new two year term with the Leinster champions.

There was intense speculation that Fitzgerald was about to leave Wexford for the vacant Galway manager's position, with the Sixmilebridge man himself indicating he was "torn" on the matter in an interview with Mid West Radio this week.

However, Wexford GAA have announced within the last while that Fitzgerald has been re-appointed for a two year term, saying that "great progress had been made under his direction" and they were "looking forward to the journey ahead."

Speaking after the news, Fitzgerald told the Independent.ie that it would have "broken my heart" to leave Wexford.

"This was never about a choice between Wexford and another county. It would have broken my heart to walk away from these Wexford players and, in the end, I just couldn't do that."

Fitzgerald, who led his native Clare to an All-Ireland title in 2013, took over in Wexford in late 2016, leading them to a rare championship win over Kilkenny in his first season.

In 2019, he guided Wexford to a first Leinster title in fifteen years after which they were narrowly pipped by eventual All-Ireland champions Tipperary in a dramatic All-Ireland semi-final.
