First round of the U12 Championship was played in glorious conditions in O'Garney Park this Sunday morning. With all the players buzzing about the exploits of their U14 counterparts the previous day, it was fitting that our squad were starting their campaign against Inagh Kilnamona. The Bridge fielded 3 teams with Teams Orange and Yellow playing at 10:30 and Team Blue starting their campaign at 11:45.
Team Orange had a big challenge against their IK counterparts and eventually lost after conceding a couple of late goals. Notable performances for the Orange team were in defense with strong showings from captain Charlie Keane, Dylan Lee and Cillian O'Connor.
Things were more straight forward for Team Yellow who took control of their game after the first water-break and ran out winners despite a strong finish by IK. Great performances on this team included Colum Keane, Cuan McGiolla Cearra, Dougie Brew and captain Liam Sweeney.
Team Blue, captained by Steven Gavin, ran out easy winners in their game against an IK side that were missing some key personnel. Fine scoring from Zak Phelan and Conor Fitzpatrick was complemented by great work out the field by Dathi Casey ,Jack O'Halloran and Rory Chaplin.
Overall, a great morning to start the championship for the squad. Days like this are serious collective effort by a large group of people - 38 players, 12 coaches and 3 refs (big shout out to Kevin Phelan, Kieran Keating and Kevin Corry) all pulling together to ensure everything ran off smoothly. Many thanks also to Minor Club secretary Gwen Leyden who has been kept very busy registering games and providing teamsheets by this particular squad!
Next round of the championship takes place on the weekend of Oct 3rd v Doora Barefield with the squad also hoping to continue their recent 'game a week' streak with a challenge game next weekend.
