Following the successful completion of our Foundation level course where 70 new coaches were certified, the Coaching our Coaches series continued last Saturday as we saw 80 coaches take part in the Speed Coaching workshop presented by Martin Bennett.

Martin has in recent years worked as a speech coach with the Waterford hurlers from 2020-2022 and the Tipperary Minor hurling team and provided some excellent insights into the mechanics of running and the importance of a good technique. As part of the workshop Martin broke down the stages of a running stride and provided drills for coaches to implement as part of their warmup to improve player movement.

As we all know, the mechanics of running is essential for all kids and adults irrespective of what sport they play and while a lot believe you are either born with speed like Seadna Morey or not - this myth was addressed as part of Martins workshop. His philosophy is that sprinting is not an inherited talent but a skill. Often 'naturally slow' athletes are just athletes who don't know how to run effectively. By breaking down their mechanics and developing proper habits, players can become more efficient and faster.

Thanks to James for recording the session which will be available to coaches in the coming days and also to the players who took part in the workshop providing great examples of different running techniques.

The next stage in our Coaching the Coaches series starts next Monday (13/02) when the Level 1 coaching course begins - this runs over 5 Monday nights and is presented by the highly renowned Paudie Butler and Peter Casey. Check out Paudie in action here
